WORKSHOP INFORMATION

Workshop 1: Insulating Exterior Walls

Insulation is relatively cheap and makes a huge difference in keeping your house warm and reducing energy bills. The primary cost is labor. With this course you will learn some steps in how to do it yourself, and if you hire someone you will know the questions to ask and if they are doing the job correctly. We have found that the best way to insulate exterior walls on a frame building is to blow in cellulose insulation. In this workshop you will learn the basic techniques for insulating walls from the inside using cellulose insulation including:

  • Preparing the site
  • Understanding the walls and how they work
  • Determining where the holes will go and drilling them
  • How the insulation blower works
  • Putting the insulation into the blower
  • Using the nosel to blow insulation in to the walls
  • Patching the walls when finished
  • Clean-up

Instructors: Jerry Ropp, Jeanne Stass and Jim Schenk

Workshop 2: Installing Replacement Windows

Windows are one of the greatest energy losers in old homes. In the winter, cold air rushes in while hot air rushes out. The opposite happens in the summer. New double pane windows will greatly decrease energy loss in your older home. While the windows are not cheap, the installation is very expensive. Again, whether you plan to do it yourself or hire someone, this workshop will prepare you. You will learn:

  • Determining the need for new windows
  • Measuring the opening of the window and ordering new ones
  • the tools needed to remove old windows and install new ones
  • Preparing the opening for new windows
  • Installing new windows
  • Clean-up

This will be a hands on workshop; you will help to remove and install a window. Instructors: Jim and Devin Schenk
